Brand Series - Not A Boring Box

Not a Boring Box provides customers with a wide array of innovative storage solutions, at an affordable price tag. From glass spice jars to helpful jewellery organisers, they have thought of it all. And to top it off, everything is simply stunning, so you’ll actually want to show the products off instead of hiding them away.

1. What is your background and is it connected to your business?

I’m originally from Scotland but moved down to London to start my career after university where I worked in accountancy firms, banks and fin techs doing Internal Audit and Risk Management. I really enjoyed my job and learnt a significant amount about how businesses work - but felt that my career lacked flexibility and creativity. So not massively connected to my business.

2. What made your start Not a boring box?

I have always loved being organised and being efficient with every aspect of my time. During lockdown, I was spending a lot of time organising things at my home and it had always bugged me that I couldn’t find a one stop shop for all things home storage in the UK.  Sick of overpriced and unappealing storage solutions, or really bad quality I just knew I could find better. I took a leap of faith, and Not a Boring Box was born.

3. What one activity would you say has led to growth in your business?

Social Media for sure. It is really amazing how anyone can start a business these days and be discovered on social media - you don't need huge marketing budgets - but you do need to invest your time.

4. You have had quite a bit of press for your business. Do you have any advice for other small business owners trying to get some press or PR too?

So I have literally done everything myself, website, logo, to save cash. The one thing I tried to do but couldn't crack was PR. I eventually started working with an agency who have just been amazing and Not A Boring Box has been in The Times, Elle, Homes and Gardens to name a few.

5. Why do you think 'organising' is so popular right now?

The fact that home organisation has been all over instagram and Netflix with the type of shows like the home edit etc - so people have been looking to get organised and I provide the products to do so.

Research shows that organisation can improve wellbeing and wellbeing improves happiness and productivity.  Our homes have become our work spaces now and we spend the majority of our time there.  Organising and the knowledge that your home is completely organised gives you a sense of peace and calm – and that is so nice when we have such busy lives.  Removing clutter physically and mentally helps us focus.  That is central to all the products I stock at Not a Boring Box.

6. What does the future hold for your business?

Build brand recognition
Create an amazing reputation and customer service
Broaden product and service offerings
Expand personnel and facilities

Work on being more sustainable - from supply chain to end product

7. What one piece of advice would you give another small business owner who's earlier on in their business journey than you?

If you are in the position to do so, try and reinvest as much as you can back into the business. Doing so has helped my business grow much quicker.
